Introduction
Vista is a photography-first travel discovery app built with Expo SDK 54. It lets travelers browse curated places across Beaches & Islands, Historic Wonders, Modern Cities, and Nature & Mountains, save favorites locally, and open detail screens with costs, highlights, and maps—without needing a live backend for core browsing.
Goal
Browse without a server
Ship destinations, galleries, and highlights in on-device SQLite so the app works after install with no API dependency for core content.
Make discovery feel premium
Deliver a swipeable home deck, category filters, Discover search, and a floating curved tab bar with light/dark themes and fast cached images.
Show place context clearly
Give each destination a full detail page—hero, gallery, rating, best time to visit, daily cost, highlights, save actions, and an embedded map with Open in Maps.
Challenge
Delivering reliable maps and a smooth first launch on Android release builds without requiring paid Google Maps billing, while keeping local SQLite seed/boot stable and avoiding navigation update loops.
